In the heart of South America sits Paraguay, the country often confused with Uruguay, and not too well known to most.
Which is a shame, really. We love Paraguay.
Though perhaps this is the first time you've heard of it, you can take our word for it that is one of the most unique countries in the Americas, with a riveting history, precious red-dirt landscapes, two official languages, and the friendliest and most welcoming people the world has to offer.
Its craftwork and traditional arts are very representative of the culture... colorful, delicately beautiful, and time-intensive – demonstrating the happy population, the stunning scenery, and the work ethic of the people.
In the middle of the country is a town called Yataity del Guairá, which in Guarani (the official language, along with Spanish) means ‘Place of Many Yatai’, or short palm trees.
Yataity is the home of Ao Po’i, a traditional Paraguayan handcraft which you can read more about on our ‘Paraguayan Handcraft’ page. It is a quaint, quiet town, full of women who were taught by their mothers and grandmothers how to embroider and weave beautiful articles of clothing.
Most of them are older women of modest means, which sew and embroider, hoping to make a living with their ability to create wearable masterpieces.
Ao Porã, which means ‘fine clothing’ or ‘beautiful clothing’, has the mission to support and make known worldwide the amazing Paraguayan handicrafts and assist the humble artisans in their efforts to earn a living.
Not only could the world benefit from a little more beauty, but these women could benefit from our support. And we think that spreading their both unique and incredible handiwork is the way to do it.
By purchasing something from Ao Porã, you can not only look good, but feel good.
And we guarantee you'll love your authentic products just as much as we do!
